An off-track door is the one garage emergency where the wrong move makes it dramatically worse. The door hangs partly on hardware never designed to hold it, and one more press of the button can fold sections, snap cables, or bring several hundred pounds down at once. Here three causes cover nearly everything: a roller whose bearing rusted solid and started dragging, a rail knocked out of plumb in a tight driveway, and ice. Meltwater runs under the seal, refreezes overnight and bonds the door to the slab; in the morning the opener pulls against a door held down at one corner, one side lifts and the other does not, and a cable comes off its drum.
The ice bond is entirely preventable and the prevention costs nothing: keep meltwater and plough spoil away from the bottom of the door, and in a freeze watch that the door actually begins to move before you let the opener pull. The morning-after-a-thaw derailment is one of the most common calls we take in January and February, and in almost every case the door was frozen down and the button was pressed anyway.
