Bronxville is barely a square mile and one of the most architecturally deliberate places in the region. Lawrence Park's Queen Anne and Tudor houses climb a hillside around the village centre, and almost nothing about the topography is flat. Streets curve and climb, lots are terraced, and the village core is tight enough to cross on foot in minutes.
Bronxville is a hillside problem. A great many garages here are cut into the slope with a retaining wall at the back and soil against the rear of the slab, which means the interior is damp at floor level regardless of the weather and everything anchored near the floor ages faster. The approaches are the other half: single-car lanes with a sharp turn, a wall on one side, and genuinely no room for a truck to sit carelessly. We plan access before we set out, and on a below-grade garage we look at the floor-level assembly first because that is where this village's doors fail.
