Headroom is the constraint here more often than anywhere else. A 1920s garage frequently has only a few inches between the top of the door and the structure, and the standard overhead rail most installers default to simply will not fit. Low-headroom track and a side-mounted jackshaft unit solve nearly all of them properly. We measure that before quoting rather than discovering it on the ladder — which is how a customer ends up with a unit that was never going to work.
Battery backup matters here for a reason specific to the housing: a great many original Westchester garages are detached and have no side door, so the overhead door is the only way in or out. A multi-day storm outage in that situation does not just trap a car, it locks the building. We ask about the side door on every install, because the answer changes how strongly we push the battery.
