Eastchester, with Tuckahoe and the Crestwood streets beside it, is the most straightforwardly practical part of our map. Houses are modest and well built, mostly from the 1920s through the 1950s, on small close-set lots along tight streets with mature trees.
This is our most value-conscious town and we work accordingly. A great deal of the housing here has doors genuinely worth repairing rather than replacing, and we say so plainly — new springs, sealed rollers, a re-true and a fresh seal will give a sound older door many more years for a fraction of a replacement. We would rather do the honest smaller job and be called again than sell a door nobody needed. The other Eastchester factor is simply how close together everything is: garages sit near property lines and driveways are shared more often than not, so access frequently has to be arranged with a neighbour, and we sort that out before quoting rather than discovering it with a wrench in hand.
